$813 Million Dollars Awarded To Victims Of 1983 Terrorist Bombing
In 1983, when Ronald Reagan was President, the US Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon was bombed by terrorists. The attack killed 241 servicemen and wounded many others. In 2003, a Federal District Court judge in Washington ruled that the Iranian government was liable for supporting the terrorists behind the attack. Today, nine years later, damages were assessed against Iran. The recent damage assessment is in addition to more than $8.8 billion dollars in judgments against Iran for its role in the bombing. How the money will be collected from the government of Iran is another story, and in likelihood will take many more years.
